As the merry month of May arrives, the a cappella Festival and its hosts amarcord will once again set out with renewed spirit and a fresh programme – for the first time, together with and at Leipzig Opera House. In 2026, the local opera house is celebrating Albert Lortzing with its own festival, honouring a composer who made his name above all during his years in Leipzig.
To open this in-house festival, and as a nod to the connection between the two institutions, amarcord will explore what Lortzing – and, in true amarcord style, his contemporaries too – once wrote for vocal ensembles and choirs. The result will be an a cappella opening in the spirit of the Romantic tradition of male-voice choirs and the German Liedertafel movement, with works by Lortzing and other composers such as Marschner and Mendelssohn.
